Holocaust Victims Remembered At Saint John Synagogue

Dozens filled the Shaarei Zedek Synagogue in Saint John on Monday night to remember the millions killed during the Holocaust.

The keynote speaker was UNB Saint John history professor Dr. Cheryl Fury, who teaches several courses on the Holocaust.

Fury visited some of the concentration camps in Germany and Poland and tells us she feels responsible to share what she learned with others.

"We're coming to a point that there are so many Holocaust survivors who are passing away that nobody is going to be able to bear witness anymore," says Fury. "So it needs to be people like me and people in all different walks of life."

Fury says remembering what happened then is even more important in an age where the number of pro-Nazi and white supremacy groups are on the rise.

"Whether it's antisemitism or it's anti-Muslim feelings or whatever it is ... it all comes from intolerance," she says.

Fury says if we open our mind just a little bit, we'll realize how much we have in common with anybody else in the world.
