The Saint John Human Development Council is getting 40 thousand dollars in federal money to carry out research so we have a better idea of how many people in the city are homeless.
Randy Hatfield of the Human Development Council says he knows there are alot of young people who could be considered homeless but it has been difficult to determine how many there are.
He thinks Saint John’s problem is those that are relatively homeless who couch surf between friends and family but don’t have safe, secure housing.
Hatfield knows the Salvation Army hostel in the south end and Coverdale for homeless women on Waterloo Street are usually filled but he suspects that’s only the tip of the iceberg.
