Two things questions need to be asked when it comes to shale gas exploration. President of the Atlantica Centre for Energy John Herron says we need to know if there’s enough natural gas in the province to be commercially viable, and we’re protected if something goes wrong.
According to Herron, just 10 years ago there was no shale gas produced on this continent. Now, 30% of global gas is shale. He says if we’re to move forward with fracking, we need to know that if a company does something wrong, the government will have our back. There will also have to be regulations to make sure we protect our ground water, environment and overall health. We also don’t know if there’s enough natural gas to make profit.
Herron says one thing that’s certain is in 4-6 years the natural gas from the Sable Offshore Energy Project will run out, and we’ll either have to produce natural gas here or have it delivered from a reversed pipeline from Pennsylvania.
