The latest in a series of public meetings tonight in Hampton on whether the town should proceed with a multi-purpose arena and whether the surrounding local service districts are willing to chip in. They weren’t willing to do that in Grand Bay-Westfield and now a proposal to build a new arena in Rothesay at a cost of 13 million dollars is running into opposition over what effect this will have on the town’s property tax rate.
A committee on recreation in Hampton was formed in 2011 to assess the needs and whether the local service districts near the town would be willing to share in the cost.
The Hampton Arena has been up and running since 1977 but the town believes it’s nearing the end of its life span.
