City Police are still investigating after an early morning assault at Richmond and Exmouth Streets around 2:20am.
A 47 year old man was taken to hospital with substantial injuries to his head and face after being assaulted with a weapon.
Police say he will survive and more than one person may have been involved.
The forensic team is on the case, but no arrests have been made yet.
