Provincial NDP leader Dominic Cardy says a universal daycare program will be part of the party’s platform, saying it would not only help working families but improve the education system with early childhood learning. As for students already in the system who are having a tough time with reading and writing, Cardy says the mentorship programme started in Saint John should be expanded provincewide.
The NDP candidate in Saint John East is Phil Comeau, President of the New Brunswick Paramedics Association, who believes he has a good chance of winning, at least judging from the people in the riding he has spoken to. He says they’re telling him they are fed up and ready for change.
As for the cost of a universal daycare programme, Cardy argues the money is there to pay for it. He accuses both the Liberals and Conservatives of backing away.
