Yoenis Cespedes of the Oakland A’s becomes the first repeat winner of the All-Star home run derby in 15 years since Ken Griffey Junior. The All-Star game is played tonight. Seattle’s Felix Hernandez will start for the American League against Adam Wainwright of the Cardinals for the National League.
In the River Valley Oldtimers League, the Molson Merchants over Home Hardware 19-4 and Exit Realty downed the Browns Flat Alpines 16-8.
A bid by lawyers for former New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez to suppress evidence from a cellphone and video surveillance taken from his Boston area home during the investigation of Odin Lloyd’s murder has been rejected by the judge hearing the case. The Patriots are reluctant to hand over scouting reports and a psychological profile of Hernandez to the defense team. Coach Bill Belichek and owner Robert Kraft have both been interviewed as part of the investigation.
The Chicago Blackhawks have hired Kevin Dineen as an assistant coach. Dineen most recently coached the Canadian women’s national team to a gold medal in the 2014 Olympic Winter Games.
