The Saint John sign on Fort Howe will be getting a facelift over the next two weeks at a cost of more than 34 thousand dollars.
LED lighting will be installed that’s supposed to last anywhere from 60,000 to 90,000 hours as compared to 15,000 hours for the fluorescent lights. There will be, we are told, better illumination and minimal maintenance.
The sign before the retrofit cost the city $9,000 per year. It’s expected with the new lighting, the electrical cost to the city will be reduced to $1,000 a year.
Saint John Energy picked up the cost of installing the sign back in 1999. After that was done, the City was responsible for ongoing maintenance including the cost of the lights.
