The 24-year-old man who shot and killed three RCMP officers and wounded two others in northwest Moncton on June 4th of this year will likely be in prison for the rest of his life.
Court of Queen’s Bench Chief Justice David Smith has sentenced Justin Bourque to 75 years in prison before he can be eligible for parole.
Outside the courthouse this afternoon, Assistant Commissioner Roger Brown, New Brunswick RCMP’s commanding officer, believes the historic ruling will be a deterrent.
“We’ve all sat through a very difficult four and a half months. This is probably one of the worst crimes we’ve ever seen in our country. We saw three of our own gunned down because of the job they do. They were doing their job that night.”
Brown says this has been a difficult time for the RCMP across the country and for the community as a whole and he feels this decision will allow the healing process to continue.
Brown adds his heart goes out to the families of the fallen Mounties and he’s pleased the six children will never have to grow up and sit through a parole board hearing.
