We’re now a few weeks into January – and it’s time to ask yourself how that resolution to quit smoking is shaping up. If you still haven’t managed to kick the cancer-causing habit, National Non-Smoking Week is kicking off on Sunday and it’s another chance to get on track.
Barbara Walls of the National Lung Association tells uss you need to have a plan in place for situations like going to the bar or having your morning coffee where you would normally light up, whether it’s grabbing a glass of water, playing with a fidget toy, or simply excusing yourself from the situation.
Walls says there are prescriptions and other nicotine replacement therapies that can make quitting stick for you, and you shouldn’t be embarrassed talking to your doctor or calling their free hotline.
Prescription smoking cessation therapies are covered under the New Brunswick Prescription Drug Program (NBPDP) and the New Brunswick Drug Plan. You can get individual counseling by phone (Smokers’ Helpline 1-877-513-5353) or in person with your doctor.
