Federal Justice Minister Peter MacKay dropped by Moncton High School today to talk with students about cyberbullying.
MacKay was also outlining the new federal legislation, “Protecting Canadians from Online Crime Act”, which makes it a criminal offence to share an intimate image of a person without their consent.
MacKay was impressed by how knowledgeable the students seemed to be.
“I’m very impressed with the detailed knowledge they have about this legislation itself. But it impacts them. Because of the prevalence of activity on the internet, it stands to reason that this generation is very informed about what is happening online.”
MacKay adds the new legislation is designed to fill the gaps in the Criminal Code which means charges could be laid against the sender of an unauthorized image and also others who re-send the image.
