A Saint John architect will be travelling to Nepal to help in the aftermath of Saturday’s major earthquake and powerful aftershocks that have left thousands dead and many more missing or homeless.
There are fears the death toll could rise to 10 thousand.
Neil Bauman is frequently deployed by the Red Cross on international missions because his specialty is emergency sheltering and planning.
He says the rebuilding effort will take many years but he’s hoping that with the agencies on the ground they can quickly get people into safe homes fairly soon.
He expects the damage to the city’s infrastructure will be quite concerning and the bottlenecks that come from rubble.
Bauman just returned to Saint John a few days ago from the South Pacific Island of Vanuatu where he been assessing the damage and what the shelter needs
were following last month’s Tropical Cyclone “Pam”.
