A submission by Common Councillor Bill Farren to review the city’s policy on dealing with vehicle damage caused by potholes and to try and find ways to help those affected financially not getting any traction around the council horseshoe.
Farren says in a lot of cases when residents whose vehicles are damaged by potholes contact the city, the city is telling them it’s the first time they’ve heard about the pothole and they reserve the right to fix it. Farren says that he believes these residents need help in some form.
Meantime, Councillor John Mackenzie says that to change things around and start putting the expectation out there that if you hit a pothole it’s quite possible you’re going to have it fixed by the city, is an expectation that’s going to bankrupt the city.
Councillor Shirley McAlary says the problem with this is that there would never be any way we could determine how the damage happened, and Councillor Donna Reardon says you ride on the road at your own risk to a certain extent.
The motion was defeated with an 8-1 vote, with only Councillor Farren voting in favour.
