Utter devastation is how one member of the World Vision Canada team describes the scene in Nepal after a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck over the weekend.
Incoming President and CEO Michael Messenger who is originally from Moncton, is in a community near the epicentre of the quake. He says 85 to 90 per cent of the homes have been reduced to rubble or are no longer safe to live in. Many families escaped their homes while the walls were collapsing behind them.
At least 5000 people are dead, and Messenger says donations are urgently needed.
Relief supplies are just beginning to arrive and the need is signficant.
Maritimers are being encouraged to make a donation through one of several charities, including World Vision. The Canadian government is matching donations dollar-for-dollar until May 25.
