For the first time, Moncton is hosting the Eastern Canadian Gymnastics Championships.
This weekend more than 650 athletes, 150 coaches, and up to 100 officials from Newfoundland to Ontario will be in town competing at the top provincial level.
Spokesperson David LeBlanc says three of the four gymnastics disciplines will be on display here.
“Women’s Artistic Gymnastics, and that’s where you see the girls on the bars and the balance beam,” says LeBlanc. “There’s the Men’s Artistic Gymnastics, and that’s where you see the guys on the rings and the pommel horse, as well as trampoline and tumbling.”
LeBlanc says New Brunswick is fielding a team of 49 athletes, and this is preparation for national level competition.
“They are the top portion of the provincial levels. Their next challenge will be national championships so this is the step to Canadian championships,” says LeBlanc.
The competition runs all weekend long at the UdeM CEPS (SEPPS) Fieldhouse.
