Security footage from the Saint John Regional Hospital, sign-in & sign-out sheets and photographs among the items marked as exhibits on the first day of testimony in the inquest into the death of 22-year-old Serena Perry.
The first witness to be called to the stand, a Constable with the Saint John police, identifying the items.
In February of 2012, Serena Perry was found dead in the amphitheatre of the Regional Hospital, which was supposed to be locked. Perry was an involuntary psychiatric patient in the hospital at the time, however she was allowed to take unsupervised breaks. While police had a suspect in the case, the forensic pathology examination could not confirm a cause of death and therefore no criminal charges were ever laid.
The five-member jury being taken to the hospital for a tour with Coroner John Evans telling them the purpose of the visit is so that they can get a sense of where this all took place.
Three weeks have been set aside for the inquest which will see approximately 50 witnesses.
