The Canadian Taxpayers Federation says most drivers in the province are not aware that gas taxes have risen by 45 per cent in just the last four years and 35 per cent of what you pay when you fill up is made up of taxes.
The gas tax was 10.7 cents a litre back in the winter of 2011 in the province and now it’s up to 15.5 cents a litre.
The Federation’s Atlantic Director Kevin Lacey says you’re also being charged tax on tax with the H-S-T in New Brunswick which is unfair and should be changed. This tax on tax costs you an additional 3 cents a litre or about $1.80 every time you fill your tank.
The Federation is also calling for the 1.5 cent a litre federal deficit elimination tax be itself eliminated because as the Harper Government has proclaimed, there is no longer a federal deficit.
