Five concepts of what an RCMP Memorial in Moncton should look like, were officially unveiled to the public last night.
The artists, displayed their thoughts and ideas of how we can honour the lives of three officers killed during the tragic events of June 4th last year.
Emphasis was placed on things like the porch light, and getting to know the officers on a more personal level. All five artists also emphasized the need for community input to make the project successful.
Morgan Macdonald from Newfoundland says, “My hope is that I will get to work with many of you to incorporate a vision that the whole community can be proud of.”
Fred Harrison and Darren Byers from New Brunswick explained that their Memorial will focus on how these three men lived their lives, and who they loved, and what they were passionate about.
Peter Powning, another artist from New Brunswick, proposed a monument that will ensure recognition, as well as celebrate the men who were part of a greater community.
Illarion Gallant from British Columbia says his Memorial is inspired by two great Canadian icons, the maple leafs and the RCMP ceremonial Red Serge and he called his Memorial, fallen leaves.
James Smith from Ontario wants to create a site, where visitors can come for decades, and be reminded of the qualities of the character of these three Constables who lost their lives so suddenly.
The name of the successful artist will be announced to the public on June 4th, and the completed RCMP Memorial will be unveiled in June of 2016, in Riverfront Park.
