The National Farmers Union says young farmers in the province need more support.
Youth President Kevin Arsenault says when the provincial government killed the food security bill and its buy local provision, it was a bitter disappointment.
He would like to see a buy local policy in place for hospitals, schools and nursing homes with the provincial government making a concerted effort at developing new markets for New Brunswick farm products.
Arsenault dismisses the excuse that more consultation was needed. He believes they killed the legislation because they didn’t propose it.
The average age of farmers in the province is now almost 56 and the number of farms dropped by 6 per cent from 2006 to 2011.
