After more than 6 years and interviews with over 7 thousand people, the much anticipated Truth and Reconciliation Commission will be releasing its final report tomorrow. It doesn’t make for pleasant reading.
Commission chair Mr. Justice Murray Sinclair says at least 6 thousand aboriginal children died while at residential schools.
Supreme Court Chief Justice Beverley McLachlin is blunt when she says the Canadian government at the time attempted to commit “cultural genocide” against aboriginal peoples. She calls it the worst stain on Canada’s human-rights record.
Mr. Justice Sinclair says if this was perpetrated today, those responsible would likely be brought before the World Court in the Hague on charges of genocide.
