The Government of Prince Edward Island working out a deal with The Moncton Hospital to provide abortion services for women from the island.
Island women can directly access the service in Moncton and have the procedure covered by P.E.I. Medicare by presenting their provincial health card.
The new service begins on July 1st.
In a news relase, PEI Premier Wade MacLauchlan says their government has an obligation to be in line with the Charter of Rights and Freedoms
He adds this new arrangement removes barriers similar to those identified in the 1988 Morgentaler decision and provides women access to confidential and quality care.
The PEI government currently provides coverage for abortions at the QEII Hospital in Halifax.
