The final nail is now in the coffin of Browns Flat elementary with provincial Education Minister Serge Rouselle approving the District Education Council’s recommendation to close the school.
The announcement being made at the DEC meeting held Wednesday night.
There’s been criticism that proper procedure wasn’t followed before recommending closure however Chair Rob Fowler tells us it absolutely was. Fowler says Policy 409 is very specficic about the criteria you have to consider, the number of meetings you have to have and they followed that to the letter.
Browns Flat elementary will be closing its doors on June 30 and letters are going home on Thursday with the students detailing the situation. Anglophone South Superintendant Zoe Watson says the letter also states that they will be in touch about organizing transition activities for the students.
The students from that school will be going to Westfield elementary school in Grand Bay-Westfield.
