A small victory for those living in the old North end with word that the Nick Nicolle Community Centre will continue to have access to Lorne Middle’s gym and computer tech lab despite the school closing.
That from Anglophone South District Education Council Chair Rob Fowler who tells us, typically, when they declare a building surplus the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure takes over and they usually want the building empty with no tenants.
However, DTI has agreed to make an exception for Lorne.
Fowler says they have been able to secure the building for use of the community at least up until March 31, 2016, when the building will transfer to DTI’s domain.
President of ONE Change Tony Dickinson tells us the development is incredibly exciting. He says “knowing that people aren’t going to lose access to that service, you know, it’s been a very good day.”
Fowler says right now DEC staff are working with the City to come up a community use agreement to take care of all the liabilities and housekeeping details.
