In 2012, more than 21,000 Canadian kids were registered as being home-schooled, an increase of 29 per cent over a 5 year period.
The Fraser Institute study finds parents like home schooling because it fits with their busy lives like juggling several extra-curricular activities or having a child with health or learning challenges.
While home schooling has grown to about 3% of the US student population, it represents less than one-half percent of the Canadian student population.
This may be because the real home schooling numbers are unknown because researchers have found some families don’t register their home school with local authorities.
