The proposed taxi bylaw comes up for final approval by Common Council tonight and there have been changes made to the original proposal.
The maximum age for taxis will be gradually implemented from 10 years old in 2016 to 7 years in 2019 before they’re taken off the road. David Gaudette of the Saint John Taxi Association says there should be exceptions depending on the condition of the vehicle. He points to the white Cadillac you see around town which dates back to the early 80`s but is in tip top shape.
71 per cent of those who responded to a questionnaire from the Taxi Committee, mostly taxi owners and drivers, said they were not happy with the 7 year old stipulation.
The proposed meter rates will remain unchanged but the liability insurance coverage needed will drop from the proposed 2 million dollars to 1 million.
