The taxi bylaw has been approved by Common Council by a vote of 5-4 effective May 2016.
Meters will be added to cabs despite some drivers feeling it’s unfair to people with low incomes, who are used to a fixed rate.
Don Lyons works for Diamond Taxi, he feels like the drivers weren’t represented fairly through the taxi bylaw advisory committee.
The maximum age for taxis will be 10 years old as of next year and will lower to 7 years by 2019.
The meter rates will stay the same but the liability insurance coverage will drop from 2 million to 1 million.
