The Francophone and Anglophone Health Authorities have accepted recommendations from the Auditor-General after numerous deficiencies in preventing infections were uncovered.
The deficiencies in Kim MacPherson’s report include healthcare workers not cleaning their hands as they should, improperly storing biomedical waste, overcrowding in certain treatment areas and a number of issues with delivering, storing and using clothing and linens.
One out of every 10 patients admitted to hospital will suffer an infection and about 12,000 deaths in Canada are caused by these each year.
In 2013-2014, hospitals in New Brunswick reported 228 cases of Clostridium difficile infection.
