Federal funding announced today will help the Coalition for Pay Equity launch a study with new partners on the economic prosperity of women in the province.
Executive Director Johanne Perron says the more than 230,000 dollars will greatly help them study women in the caregiving sector.
She says there are 15,000 women in the field like childcare, home support and special care homes.
“And they earn about 11 to 15 dollars an hour, we know they should be earning around 20 dollars if they had fair wages and if we compared with what they would earn in neighbouring provinces,” says Perron.
She says it’s about expanding the knowledge of everyone about what life is like for women in the caregiving sector.
“We will bring everybody to the table and really study the situation and look at what are the obstacles to the economic prosperity of women in the caregiving sector,” says Perron.
Perron says they will be working with the NBCC, the Human Service Coalition, and Women’s Equality Branch.
