It will be the end of an era in the uptown when the Birks store on King Street closes on August 22nd. If you’ve been around long enough you might remember it was once located in the Admiral Beatty Hotel. After the closure, Birks will no longer have a presence in Atlantic Canada.
The Executive-Director of Uptown Saint John Nancy Tissington, while disappointed, doesn’t believe that particular storefront will remain vacant for any length of time because of its prominent location.
A for lease sign is also up outside another jewellry store on King Street, Cowie and Son.
Birks has not responded to our inquiries as to why the Saint John store is being closed after so many years and Tissington tells us she doesn’t know.
