After much debate and discussion, the City of Moncton is finally getting a downtown centre – at a pricetag of roughly $104 million.
City Council approved the centre’s funding plan at a special meeting yesterday with three NAY votes from Councillors Paul Pellerin, Daniel Bourgeois and Brian Hicks.
Councillor Hicks stated there were too many unanswered questions about the project.
Mayor George LeBlanc says city council and staff have done their due diligence when it comes to this historic project.
Councillor-at-large Dawn Arnold believes now is the time to move the city forward on a positive direction.
City Council also examined two requests for proposals – one from Bird Capital and the other from Ellis Don.
Council voted to enter into a contract with Bird Capital for the multi-purpose facility withan NHL-sized arena, seating for up to 9500 with additional club and luxury seats.
Construction will begin on the former Highfield Square site next year with a completion date set for the fall of 2018.
