The second-degree murder trial of Dennis Oland being shown part of a taped police interview between the Saint John police officer who would take over as lead investigator in the Richard Oland case, and Dennis Oland himself.
Dennis Oland appearing calm and collected throughout the section of interview shown to the jury and was wearing what appears to be tan coloured pants and a light blue polo shirt. In the interview with Constable Stephen Davidson he says that his father was a really healthy guy, that “he sails like crazy.”
He says one of the first things that runs through his head when it comes to his father’s death is that is this one of those “crackhead-type things or, whatever, where someone goes in and, you know, does that kind of thing … or, you know, like or of being in the wrong place at the wrong time.”
He says that his father was not the easiest guy in the world to get along with and his relationship with him was probably perfect until he became a teenager describing the teenage years as difficult. He says that he was Richard Oland’s only son so he believes that he took most of the pressure. He says that he believes that his father’s upbringing was tougher than his, however.
Dennis says he and his father were not close and that his father had a feeling that you can’t be friends with your son.
Dennis says the biggest thing his dad ever did for him was bankrolling his divorce. He says that his divorce was a very bitter experience and he was likely going to lose his home. He says Richard stepped up and said that wasn’t going to happen. He ended up paying interest-only mortage payments of $1600 to his father but says, “to his credit he never threw that in my face.”
