The police officer who would become the lead investigator in the Richard Oland case testifying that when he went to 52 Canterbury Street on the morning of July 7, 2011 that was the first murder scene had had responded to since joining the Major Crime Unit of the Saint John police only a few days before.
Constable Stephen Davidson agreeing with defence lawyer Gary Miller while under cross-examination that he went down with Constable Anthony Gilbert that morning to learn the ropes of the unit. Davidson has testified that he unlocked the exit door leading to the alleyway outside of Richard Oland’s office but he can’t recall if he went outside into the alleyway that day or two days later. The defence has suggested this would be the preferred exit route for the killer.
Davidson testifying there’s nothing in his notes or narrative about checking any doors. Miller arguing, “does that not point out the significance of note-taking,” saying, “if you had made notes on July 7 or 9 that you checked the exit door and jumped out there would be much less controversy today about this,” with Davidson agreeing.
Davidson finishing up his testimony on Tuesday afternoon. The trial resumes on Wednesday morning at the Saint John Law Courts and CHSJ News reporter Laura Lyall, who is covering the Dennis Oland trial, will be live-tweeting from the courtroom.
