A leadership training course for women in Saint John is raising money by selling a book of poetry inspired by the poem “Just Because”.
Brenda Murphy of the Saint John Women’s Empowerment Network says the poem “Just Because” by Esther Kamkar of Iran was written about her experience with discrimination after moving to the United States.
Murphy says they have found the poem has powerful applications in their program.
She says they have used that poem in the program to help women consider their own circumstances by thinking “just because I’m a single mom doesn’t mean I’m a bad mom”.
The POWER UP! 10 week leadership training program is designed to help low income women take the next step in their journey out of poverty.
The book they have compiled includes 40 poems, costs $20 and is available at the network offices in Saint John.
