The risks of hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, is a very debatable topic.
Dr. Kenneth P. Green of the Fraser Institute says Canada is essentially sitting on a gold mine in terms of the amount of natural gas that is available.
He says in the United States, a million wells have been used for fracking and there’s only one possible instance of water contamination, which he attributes to a poorly constructed water well.
He says Canada has not had any instances of well contamination.
Green admits the risks associated with fracking are real, but says they are readily manageable with existing technologies.
Green says bans on fracking are not justifiable when looking at the latest research.
