The Atlantic Salmon Federation seeing lower salmon license numbers this year.
One reason for the low sales for salmon fishing licenses is a new rule put in place this year by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans stipulating live release only for salmon fishing.
Director of Programs Nathan Wilbur tells us there was a drop in salmon licenses this year but he points out they do need anglers.
He says the local fisherman were not out this year and the salmon need them especially adding they are eyes and ears on the water and the stewards of the resource.
Wilbur suggests a hook and release policy in Canada would give us leverage with Greenland so they will also decrease their catch and improve the stock.
