At the second-degree murder trial of Dennis Oland Mr. Justice Jack Walsh giving the jury a mid-trial instruction about the evidence “suggesting the police investigation was inadequate.”
Walsh telling the jurors it will be up to them to decide whether that evidence alone or in conjunction with other evidence causes them to have a reasonable doubt about Dennis Oland’s guilt.
This instruction delivered on day 30 of the second-degree murder trial of Dennis Oland, who is accused of killing his father Richard Oland. His bludgeoned body was discovered face down in a pool of blood in his office at 52 Canterbury Street in uptown Saint John. 65 days have been set aside for this trial.
A chartered accountant who worked for Richard Oland and has been described as his right hand man and a friend taking the stand after the instruction and testifying at the trial that Richard Oland had a meeting about his life insurance policy on July 6, 2011, the day before Richard’s body was found.
Robert McFadden says on July 6, 2011 two men were looking to sell Richard Oland a new life insurance policy, however Richard already had a life insurance policy and the beneficiary was his investment firm, Far End Corporation. McFadden saying that Richard did not have any health issues that he was aware of.
He says the days at Far End Corporation were often interesting however July 6 was not a hectic day and there was not a deadline to be met. McFadden left the office with his son, Galen McFadden, at 5:30pm that day. In Dennis Oland’s police interview he said he went to his father’s office twice, once at 5:15pm and he didn’t go in, then again at around 5:30pm.
McFadden doesn’t remember running into Dennis Oland when he left the office that day.
McFadden testifying that as of July 6, 2011, the combined total of Richard Oland’s companies was $36-million.
