A former jail guard has been sentenced to a year in jail for dealing drugs.
49 year old Joel Dion Thomas of Queen Street pleaded guilty to possessing marijuana for the purpose of trafficking and possessing the proceeds of crime.
The court was told City Police received information about Thomas dealing drugs in jail and put him under surveillance. He was later seen with known drug dealers.
Police seized 99 grams of marijuana, over 12 hundred dollars and a cellphone.
The court was told Thomas began selling drugs for financial reasons to provide more for his family.
The 12 month sentence was a joint recommendation from the defense and prosecution. Provincial Judge Andrew Palmer accepted that recommendation although he made clear he was more inclined to impose a longer term behind bars.
A report prepared before sentencing stated Thomas has good work and family histories.
