The 75th anniversary of the sinking of HMS Jervis Bay will be commemorated tomorrow at noonhour in a special ceremony.
Historian Harold Wright says the Jervis Bay was refitted at the Drydock and then was escorting 37 ships in the North Atlantic when the convoy was attacked by a German battleship.
The Jervis Bay engaged the battleship which prevented other ships from being sunk. All but 65 of the 256 crew members were killed.
Wright says many of the crew members had socialised with Saint Johnners and a few even married local women while the ship was being refitted.
The commemoration takes place at the Simonds Lions Club in Loch Lomand Villa. All those attending are being asked to be seated by 11:45 tomorrow morning.
Students from Bayview School will sing for the first time a Remembrance Day song.
Students will also read the names of 31 Canadian crew members and the ship’s bell from HMCS Saint John will be tolled for each crew members.
