Prime Minister Trudeau’s Cabinet choices bring gender parity to the government for the first time ever.
Assistant Political Professor at Mount Allison University Mario Levesque says there was much speculation as to what role MP Dominic Leblanc would be given. Many thought he would receive a high profile portfolio that had a lot of dollars attached to it, like Justice, or Defence Minister or Foreign Affairs, but Government House Leader also suits him very well.
He says, “For the government to want to do anything, they have to be able to get it through the House of Commons. You need to be able to strategize when to introduce bills, how to build coalitions between MP’s but also across parties. That’s all strategizing and Mr. Leblanc is a master at that.”
Levesque says he wasn’t surprised that Leblanc was the only one chosen from New Brunswick for a post. He says Trudeau chose one person from each province in Atlantic Canada, for a total of four, which is pretty good.
