New Brunswick’s Official Languages Commissioner took questions from MLA’s yesterday afternoon, with several that directly related to an investigation against Commissionaire Wayne Grant. His hours were cut in the spring after he was unable to speak French when approached by Katherine D’Entremont at the main government office in Fredericton.
When asked by Conservative Leader Bruce Fitch whether or not Grant’s employer jumped the gun before she made her recommendations, she responded, “Mr. Fitch, I respectfully suggest that you ask the department that question. I do not provide directives to government departments similar to my officer colleagues. Our job is to look at issues and pursue an investigation if we believe there are issues of non-compliance, and I have yet to make any recommendation in this matter.”
D’Entremont says there are about a dozen investigation reports on their website, and at least 3 of those reports pertain to lack of service in English by government institutions.
