Both the Transit Commission and City Police are under budget so far this year……..That’s the message to be delivered tonight to Common Council.
The President of local 1182 of the Amalgamated Transit Union Tom McGraw says, at some point, there has to be a long term plan for public transit in the city in spite of the budgetary constraints. With the reduced service, both revenue and ridership have declined but so have expenses. McGraw estimates another million or million and a half dollars would be needed annually to match what Moncton spends on public transit.
New Police Chief John Bates is looking to hire four additional police officers next year. He and the police union are both warning about burnout among the frontline officers because of so much overtime due to the requirement for a minimal number of police officers being needed for each shift.
