Now that the weather has turned colder, increasing the risk of people getting sick, Horizon Health is warning against the misuse of antibiotics.
A survey done back in 2012 at 21 New Brunswick hospitals found almost half of antibiotic prescriptions were either inappropriate or undocumented.
Dietician Vanessa Yurcheyson of the Superstore says you can also lower the chances of coming down with a cold or the flu with the proper diet. Yurcheyson says most people will reach for citrus fruits but you can also consume garlic, beans, legumes, nuts, seafood and poultry to keep your immune system strong.
Horizon Health making clear antibiotics are for bacterial infections and not for colds or the flu which are caused by viruses.
