Independent Senator John Wallace, who used to sit as a Conservative and Liberal Senator Joe Day, both from the Saint John area, are singing from the same hymn sheet when it comes to the need for a more independent Senate.
Day says that was the intent when the Senate came into existence.
Day says if the Senate did not just rubber stamp what the House of Commons passes then the legislation produced would be better for the country.
The Liberal Senators no longer caucus with the Liberal MP’s and Day calls that a good first step in attaining more independence.
He says there are now 22 vacancies in the Senate and he’s hoping the newcomers will arrive with more independent frames of mind and not consider themselves thethered to one party or the other.
