A fire in Bathurst destroying two commercial buildings, damaging at least two others, and displacing a number of tenants who lived on upper levels of the two and three-storey buildings on the corner of Main Street and King Avenue.
A team of eight Canadian Red Cross volunteers and staff from Bathurst and Fredericton will assist displaced tenants with emergency lodging, food, clothing and other essentials.
Upper level apartments in two adjacent buildings on King Avenue were also evacuated as a precaution while the fire was fought, but those buildings were saved and tenants were later allowed to return home.
Among businesses and organizations affected by the fire is the Canadian Red Cross. Its Bathurst service centre on the ground level in a wing of the building at 216 Main Street escaped fire damage but received water and smoke damage and will be closed indefinitely, likely until a new location can be secured.
