With the city receiving more than a million dollars less from the province next year in grant money, balancing the budget will be made that much harder.
Common Council will be holding more budget deliberations in closed session beginning late this afternoon.
Fredericton Mayor Brad Woodside says he can see the day when the provincial government doesn’t give municipalities any grant money. Councillor at Large Shirley McAlary says that isn’t so farfetched and the possibility of that happening has been discussed at the Cities of New Brunswick Association.
Mayor Mel Norton has said Common Council doesn’t want to raise the city’s tax rate next year but that was before the drop in the provincial grant.
McAlary predicts it will be a tough budget regardless of what’s decided.
