The inability for a government to balance the books since 2007 has to stop.
That from Lieutenant Governor Jocelyne Roy-Vienneau during the Gallant government’s throne speech at the Legislature.
She says without action, our province faces mounting debt that will increase our interest payments, which already represents the 5th largest expense in the province.
Roy-Vienneau says instead of tinkering around the edges, significant choices need to be made in the upcoming budget.
She says deficit budgeting needs to come to an end.
The Gallant government projects a deficit of $453 million dollars this year.
They promise to balance the budget by 2020.
Conservative MLA for Saint John Lancaster Dorothy Shephard took to twitter to say the Throne Speech is hard to criticize or applaud, because there’s nothing in it.
She says for a government promoting accountability and transparency, the speech lacked details and targets and nothing on the “how”.
