If you’re looking for a way to help the Syrian refugees coming to the Port City, the president of the YMCA of Greater Saint John has some suggestions.
Shilo Boucher says that you can become part of a welcoming team, saying their strategy is to have a group of three to five people who can come together and wrap themselves around one of the families, “to be there, to make sure they meet all the needs they have as a new person, a brand new person to a new culture.”
Boucher says if you know certain languages they could use your help and they’ve already had about 40 people step forward and they also need housing and donation teams as well. For more information on how you can help, go to http://www.ymcanewcomers.com
Saint John can expect to received up to 500 people between now and the end of February. New Brunswick can accomodate 1500. The federal government will be welcoming 25,000 refugees to this country. The government says that 307 Syrian refugees have arrived in in Canada to date.
