The Anglophone South District Education Council is proposing a reconfiguration that would see 18 students attending middle school on Deer Island go to Fundy High next year.
A group that does not want to see this happen giving a presentation at the DEC meeting in Saint John this week.
Concerned grandparent Lois Mitchell says over 7 years it’s nearly 4000 hours spent commuting.
She says it’s like living in Saint John and sending your child to Moncton every day for school.
Mitchell says the trip is shorter than that but when you add in time on the ferry and the pickups on Deer Island it’s the same.
The DEC has told the Deer Island Community School parents, teachers and staff that this proposed move is not about saving money but about what is best for these students academically.
A decision from the DEC is expected in January.
