Rothesay Council passing the 2016 town budget but it was not unanimous and entailed some heated debate.
The town’s tax rate is increasing by a cent to $1.21 and the water and sewer charge is also going up from 805 dollars to 850 dollars.
Mayor Bill Bishop says despite the increase, the tax rate is still lower than it was a few years ago.
Pat Gallagher-Jette clashed with the Mayor, Town Manager John Jarvie and fellow Councillor Matt Alexander over the town’s legal fees and why there wasn’t more detail so she voted against approving the budget. Councillor Peter Lewis also wanted to see a greater breakdown of legal fees.
Mayor Bishop says the legal challenges to the Rothesay Common upgrade cost the town almost 100 thousand dollars.
