This is national dental hygienists week which spotlights good oral health practices and helping Canadians better understand the profession.
France Bourque, executive director of the New Brunswick Dental Hygienists Association, says many people don’t realize that you can either work on your own or with a dentist.
“Dental hygienists are primary health care providers who work in a variety of settings including independent dental hygiene practice with people of all ages,” she notes.
Being a dental hygienist is about more than just cleaning teeth, Bourque says those who work in the profession develop oral care routines for patients, offer treatments and make recommendations.
